Turning to the second application described in this thesis, although the thermal behavior and structural properties of free metal clusters has been extensively studied using both experimental and theoretical methods, several issues regarding the melting and freezing behavior and the formation of large icosahedral clusters remain unresolved. In this study, our simulations demonstrated some interesting phenomena which were not shown in previous simulations but which are in close agreement with predictions based on theoretical models. In particular, according to the phase map constructed based on our observation of the behavior of gold clusters undergoing a melting-freezing cycle, we believe that the formation of icosahedral structures at elevated temperatures is a result of thermodynamics, rather than being a kinetically derived phenomena as suggested by some groups. In addition, the nature and extent of the influence of the substrate on the thermal behavior and structural properties of deposited gold nanoclusters was also revealed in this study. To our knowledge, we are the first to demonstrate a dependence of the structure of a Au island on its contact area with the substrate, which we have further characterized as a function of its 'aspect ratio', defined here as the ratio of the height to diameter of a gold island.
